The Cub Cadet Z-Force is Cub Cadet's third generation premium residential zero turn riding mower. First brought to market in 2004, the Z-Force incorporated many ?big? zero turn features in a small package for a customer demanding more or with a more demanding lawn.
Just like the Cub Cadet Commercial Enforcer, the Cub Cadet Z-Force begins with a welded box-channel frame free of any bolt-together sections like those that are found on some competitive machines. Fastened to the front is a fabricated, fully oscillating front axle. An oscillating axle is something that Cub Cadet puts on all of their zero turn mowers from the smallest RZT all the way up to the Cub Cadet Commercial Tank series. A fixed front axle doesn't allow the machine to follow lawn contours and, quite often, forces one of the front wheels and half of the mower deck far above the ground when encountering severe terrain undulations resulting in an uneven cut. An oscillating axle also reduces scalping, allows the deck to follow the terrain better and makes for a smoother riding machine.
Cub Cadet's Z-Force mowers feature serviceable, dual IZT transmissions meaning that the variable output hydrostatic pump and wheel motor are assembled as one unit for simplicity. Compared to Cub Cadet's entry-level mower, the RZT, these drive systems are made with heavier duty components, have an oil filter for longer life and deliver much smoother acceleration and direction changes. Each drive wheel has its own controls and drive system allowing each side to operate independently from the other. The hydraulic reservoir is the only shared component between the two systems.
If you've never operated a zero turn mower in the past it's very easy to learn and most people are very comfortable after only a few minutes on the machine. Learning to operate a zero turn mower like a professional can take several mowings to accomplish.
To make the machine move forward, simply push both lap bars forward. To reverse, pull both bars towards you. The harder you push or pull the faster you go. To turn the machine left or right you have to cause a differential between the two levers. For example if you're mowing straight forward and want to turn to the left, simply push further forward on the right control stick or pull back the left stick. The greater the differential between the two levers the more aggressively the machine will turn.
Engaging the mower deck is as simple as pulling a knob. The mower deck will run when the machine is moving forward or turning but will automatically shut off when moving reverse for safety. Once the machine resumes forward motion, the mower deck will automatically restart.
Cub Cadet's Z-Force series zero turns come in three cutting deck widths: 44-, 48, and 50-inch. Deck height adjustment is a breeze with the foot-operated mechanism. There are 13 cutting height settings adjustable in quarter-inch increments allowing you to fine tune the cutting height to your conditions. Cleaning your mower deck has never been easier due to Cub Cadet's deck wash system. Simply attach the included fitting to your garden hose, plug the hose fitting into the deck fitting, turn on the water and engage your mower deck. The water is directed towards the center of the deck and the spinning blades fling air and water to help loosen any attached grass. This system works pretty well if you do it right after you mow but not at all if the grass has dried.
Need to do a more thorough cleaning or remove your blades? Pulling four cotter pins is all that's required to remove your mower deck. Removal is literally a 30 second job and only 60 seconds to reinstall.
Maintenance is a snap on Cub's Z-Force series zero turns. The engine air filter, fuel filter and oil filter are easily accessed from the rear of the machine. Draining the engine oil requires no tools, as all Cub Cadets are equipped with an EZ-Drain fitting. Simply flip open the dirt cover, attach the included drain hose, push in then twist the fitting and oil will begin to drain right into your bucket! No tools, no mess.
We feel the Z-Force 44 and Z-Force 48 are the best buys in Cub Cadet's Z-Force series mower lineup. The Z-Force 44 is an excellent choice for maneuverability on medium sized lots. It's powered by a 20 hp twin-cylinder Kohler Courage engine and features a three-blade 44-inch formed cutting deck made out of heavy 12-gauge steel. Boasting a twin-cylinder 23 hp Kohler Courage engine and taller tires, the Z-Force 48 is our best seller in the series primarily due to its 11-gauge thick, three-blade 48? fabricated deck. Because it's manufactured and reinforced like a commercial mower deck, this deck will outlast the 50? cutting deck on the Z-Force 50. Although the Z-Force 50 (also powered by a 23 hp Kohler) has an additional 2-inches of cutting width for the same price, we highly recommend the Z-Force 48 as a bust buy in this class of mower when compared not only to the other Z-Force models, but also any competitive mower on the market. Check around ? you can't find more mower for the money than a Cub Cadet Z-Force 48!
